INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Brown's Bay.—There was a large attendance of members and friends at the annual ball which was held recently. Vocal items and novelty dances were featured during the evening. Prizes were won by Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. W. Veitch, Mr. Broad and Mr. Wyllie. The supper was served by the ladies' committee.

Howick.—A social and dance was held recently to celebrate the sixth birthday ot the institute. During the evening Mrs. Dunlop sang and items were given by the gleo club. Two plays were presented by the dramatic circle. Mrs. Austin, the winner of the points prize for the year, was presented with n trophy, and the president, Mrs. Rutherford, received a bouquet. The evening ended with supper, at which the birthday cake was cut. Arapuni.—At the monthly meeting Mrs. Eves was appointed secretary and Mrs. Cook vice-president. Tho continuation of the Golden Thread talks by Mrs. Cook was followed by a demonstration of the making of paper flowers by Mesdames Aikman and Wadham. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Hesketh and Worrall. As a result of the work of the institute, a girls' club has been formed, and meets oive a week.

Pntnriiru.—Two now members wore enrolled at the monthly meeting, at which Mrs. A. (J. Anderson presided. The awards for the institute courts at the Waikato Show were discussed. The working of designs on leather was demonstrated by senior girls of the District Hitch School, and Miss C. Scott spoke 011 her reeont visit to Suva. The results of the competitions were:— Darning: .Mrs. Woskitt, 1; Mrs. Cochrane, 2. Pikelets .Mrs. Thomson, 1; Mrs. A. C. Anderson, 2; Mrs. Bayers, 3. Juniors; Miss June Anderson, J. Waimauku.—Mrs. Make presided at the monthly meeting, and Miss Cow read a paper entitled "A Journev Through Britain." A demonstration ol dress designing and pattern cutting was given. The winners of the competitions were Mesdames Wightman and Morrison, and Miss Wilkins. Mrs. Newton, the convener of the drama circle, presented a play reading. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Foster, Morrison and Allen Dairy Flat. —A report on the biennial conference was given by the delegate, Mrs. IS. Bawden, at the monthly meeting of the institute. Mrs. Bawden also demonstrated the making of puff pastry.
