BOARD ELECTIONS
FRANCHISE. IN COUNTRY . -SUGGESTED EXTENSION [BT TELEGRAPH OWX CORRESPONDENT] PALMERSTOX NORTH, Wednesday A proposal that in all local body elections for power boards, hospital boards and harbour boards the Parliamentary franchise should be given country voters was debated at some length >by the Manawatu provincial executive of the Farmers' Union. In support it was pointed out that at present everybody over 21 in towns had the right to vote, whereas in tha country only ratepayers had that right, even wives being disfranchised. The president, Mr. H. J. McLearey, of Ohau, pointed out that a similar proposal had been defeated at the last inter-provincial conference at Wellington as a dangerous move. In some districts there were more men working on farms than there were who owned farms, and they could outvote ratepayers: Finally it was decided to ask the Dominion headquarters of the Farmers' Union to go into the matter with a view to urging a drastic overhaul of the present legislation governing the subject.
