FAMOUS SAILING SHIPS

Sir, —In your issue .of June 8 another paean of praise is sung in honour of the much-mentioned old clipper ship, tho Cutty Sark. She happens to survive, her contemporaries are wrecked, burned and lost. I am quite sure her intriguing name has'much to do with her popularity. As Basil Lubbock's book (the " Sailorman's Gospel ") will tell you, there were many ships of her time; for instance, the Thermopylae (who did tho passage London to Melbourne in 60 days, as against the Sark's 68 days), the Tweed, the Lightning, tho Ariel ; the Taeping, the Sir Lancelot, the Flying Cloud, and many others quite as fast and famous in the 60's and 70's—who, alas, have gone forever. They, like the thousands of men who manned them, have disappeared from human ken and now are only a legend, like the bowmen of Cressy and Agincourt. Sometime A.8., S. Thermopylae.
