Sit-Down Strike in Warsaw Opera

Almost 500 singers, dancers, members of the chorus and the orchestra and stagehands conducted a sit-down strike in the Warsaw Opera House, called when the management announced its inability to pay February salaries. The opera had a very poor season and the municipal subsidy cannot cover the deficit. The strikers slept in the boxes and stalls and also on sofas on the stage. Leading restaurants Bent food to the strikers, away their time staging a comic*opera of their own composition—a satire on the management and the City Council. The opera's business went from bad to worse since the city, which owns the theatre, rented it to a private producer, to whom it paid an annual Bubsidy of about £IB,OOO. The best Polish artists are seeking higher incomes abroad.
