Speed in Country Towns
TMSREGARD of the 30 miles an hour speed restriction in"' some country townships on the part of a number of motoristß was reported by patrols of the Automobile Association (Auckland), at tlw week-end. It was stated that in one instance a patrol was driving his car at 25-30 miles an hour through a township, when he was passed by two cars travelling at something over 40. Motorists in New Zealand, while they may not altogether approve of speed limits, must welcome the efforts of the Minister of Transport, the Hon. 11. Somple, to reduce the disastrous number of accidents that occurs annually. One method by which he is endeavouring to attain this end is by fixing a 30 miles an hour speed limit in cities, towns, boroughs and certain built-up areas, and if is the duty of all drivers to co-operate by observing the restriction carefully. Little time is lost when on tour by slowing up to pass through a township. Motorists owe it to other road-users, and to inhabitants of country towns, to drive with discretion and at a reasonable speed when travelling through these centres.
