GERMAN CONDITIONS
POLICY OF EXPANSION DESIRE FOR COLONIES A general reluctance to discuss eco nomic or political conditions in Germany was apparent among many of the German passengers on the HamburgAmerika cruise liner Reliance, which arrived from Melbourne yesterday. AH approached, however, indicated theii strong support Of the present regime under Hitler and also indicated that they wished to be on the friendliest terms with Great Britain. While upholding the union of Austria with Germany, Mr. 0. Riediger, of Breslau, a retired Government/official, said he did not think Germany desired to extend its borders farther in south-eastern Europe. In the case of the Sudeten Germans in Czechoslovakia and of Germans elsewhere all that his Government desired was that they should have full rights of citizenship and that no unfair restrictions should be placed on their social or economic life. Germany certainly desired the return of her former colonies, but she would never go to war with Britain to secure them, said Mr. Riediger. Rather was it desired that the whole matter should be settled through the medium of amicable round-table conferences.
