VISITING PAGERS

FAILURE AT ASHBUKTON BEST NOT SEEN IN ACTION ARRIVALS FROM THE NORTH [bv TELEGRAPH—own; correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday liic Auckland trainer M. Stewart, who drove Transwell find Policy to win at the New Plymouth meeting on Saturday, arrived in Christchurch yesterday with King's Play and Lady Fame. In the meantime, he also lui.s charge of Pairish Belle. Stewart, wJto is well known in Canterbury, lias enjoyed much success since he took up his quarters in Auckland, and King's I'lay is expected to take a prominent part ip the championships. Other itrrivals include Our Peggy and Mute, from Auckland. F. J. Smith's team, including Nervie's Last, King's Warrior, Cavan Chief, Crocus and Sandusky, has done well since arriving at Addington. Sandusky, a greatly-improved pacer, put up a great light in the Futurity Stakes and alter making most of the running failed only in the concluding stages, when the carefully-driven Bayard up- I peared on the scene to get second place. I

Ash burton has not been a lucky course for Smith, fij't in Juno Sanl dusky appeared unfortunate to be I beaten by Twos Loose in the Sapliug I Stakes and Nervie'a Last finished I second to Stirling Lady in the Winter' Handicap. Smith is u popular driver on Canterbury courses, and, while he could only finish third with Sandusky on Saturday, he received applause from the crowd for a very pluokv effort. Nervie's Last ran a. capital race in the inter-State Handicap, and, while ho is reported to have not been quite at his best, his Ash burton performance will command support at Addington.

Kolect, who will race in the nomination of Mr. J. P. Stratton, president of the West Australian Trotting Association, is the only western-bred horse to win the West Australian Cup. He is in regular work at Addington and has taken the eye of track watchers as u particularly good typo of pacer. He is a solidly-built bay and his style of moving suggests that he can turn on a great burst of speed. Like most of the Australian horses, his track manners are good. Our Walla, in the care of G. Gath, is the most attractive horse brought from Australia on this occasion and he is a fine typo of the standard-bred pacer.

The visiting horses who paraded at Ashburton ou Saturday, 011 their i>erformnnces. did not make a good impression, but the best were not seen there. Kolcct, Our Walla and Ladv Childewood should worthily represent Australia in the championship. The last-named, who made her first appearance in hopples since coming to Now Zealand, ran a capita] race in the Inter-State Handicap until lack of condition told.

Rev Spec, who has been off the scene for some time because of. unsoundness, is now in regular work at Addington and he looks in good order. J. McBrjde, his owner-trainer, has been very patient with the Rev do Oro gelding, who is expected to win races in the near future.
