NERVOUSNESS IN AMERICA DEFENCELESS NEW YORK CONGRESSMAN'S ASSERTIONS (Received April S, 9-45 p.m.) WASHINGTON, April 8 A member of Congress, Mr. M. Maverick (Democrat, San Antonio, Texas) asserted that the War Department has drawn up 'plans for the abandonment of all the large coastal cities in the event of a major war involving the United States. Mr. Maverick made the announcement that he is organising a House group to support the Senate amendment to the Appropriation Bill increasing the 1939 expenditures on sea coast and anti-aircraft defences by £10.000,000. "London has 900 anti-aircraft guns, but New York has only 14," said Mr. Maverick. "The United States needs 20,000 such guns,, as'well as the modernisation of the coastal defences."
