BOYS FROM WERAROA
TWO BEFORE COURT COMMENTS BY MAGISTRATE SUGGESTION TO MANAGER [by telecraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday Two boys who escaped from Weraroa training farm on March 31 and were caught near Eketahuna appeared in the Palmerston North Children's Court on 24 charges, including breaking and entering and theft, and nine of converting cars, some of which were seriously damaged. Owing to one boy being under 15 years of age the magistrate, Mr. J. L. Stout, ordered that he be returned to the farm. As the other boy was mentally deficient the magistrate adjourned proceedings to enable the Child Welfare Department to take steps to have him sent elsewhere.
The magistrate suggested to the manager of the farm that he- should advise the department that more care should be taken in selecting boys sent to the farm. Boys with lists and those who were not likely to remain on thfe farm to take advantage of the training there, should not be sent. It was becoming a public scandal and was not fair to the settlers.
