TKIUMPH OF HIGH STAE MISS L4J SNOWS BEST FORM HURDLES EASY FOR LUCIDUS [•BY TELEGRAPH —FROM ARCHER] WHANGAREI, Friday The win favourite, High Star, scored very decisively in the Portland Handicap, for which Prival was best supported on the place machine. Beginning very smartly from No. 7, Higli Star was quickly in the lead from Chief Lap, Abbey Lass, Paddy the Hip and High Delight, who were in close order and just clear of the others. High Star showed the Avay into the straight to Paddy the Hip, Chief Lap, Abbey Lass and High Delight and went on to win easing up by a length from High Delight, who finished fairly well. Paddy tho Hip, an improver, was a length and a-half away third and Chief Lap was fourth, followed by Prival, whose rider lost his irons at the start, and Abbey Lass. Tho winner is very fit. Trial .Stakes Divided The Trial Stakes was run in two divisions, Mischel springing a surprise in the first and paying over a-quarter of a century. Sho jumped out smartly from Rey Lu and White Foam, but Vaals Star ran to the front at tho top, to lead into tho stright from Mischel, Rajanya, Rey Lu and White Foam. Mischel was in command at the distance and finished strongly to win going away from Vaals Star. Rajanya made a very creditable showing for third and Hey Lu was fourth, ahead of Brazilian., who was checked after going a couple of furlongs, and Love Parade. The class was not strong. Victory in the second division went to tho well-supported Asset. Viracious began smartly, but Asset soon ran to the firont from Red Ledger, Tane Mahutu arid Pasture. Asset showed the way into the straight to Red Ledger, Pasture, Paint 1 and Viracious. Nothing else had a chance with Asset in the run home and she scored very decisively from Viracious, who finished strongly after losing his position early. Red Ledger battled on for third and Paint, after being well back early, was fourth, then followed Pasture and Electric Spear. Asset showed too much pace for the opposition. Favourite Just Beaten Tho second fancy, Tybalt, won tho Mclnnes Memorial Handicap practically from end to end, the only time he was headed being when Grateful gained a slight advantage at the foot of the straight. Grateful and Crooning were Tybalt's closest attendants for most of the journey and it looked as if Grateful would win when ho and Crooning moved up on the outside of the leader on entering the straight. However, Tybalt would not bo denied and he came home strongly under pressure to score by a head from Grateful. Bonny Gay finished well to be a neck away, third, and Airam was fourth, followed by Crooning and Paso Robleji. It was a fine race home and Tybalt stayed just a little too well for Grateful. Crooning, who was on tho outside most of the way, looked dangerous about r half-way down the straight, but she failed to run on. 'After being a fair way behind the leaders for more than half the journey, the third fancy-,- Lucidus," finished strongly to score easily in the Northland .Hack "Hurdles.' Teak attempted to win all the way and he "was still in front at the turn after running down several although he was closely.-pressed- by Gay - Broney. . and LucidiiSV" A good jump at the last fence enabled L'icidus to reach Teak and he drew away to beat him very decisively. Gav Broney, after losing ground at several, fences, was a fairthird, followed by Hlimani arid Hunting Star. Ludicus is-back to form and proved too experienced for Teak and Gay Broney, who failed to jump with confiderice and did not finish with any dash.- • Sprint Field of Four Scratchings reduced the field for tho Stewards' Handicap to four and Inver was made favourite, only to be outstayed by Sir Abb, who scored his third successive win. Inver, Tosh and Trilliarch raced abreast in the lead until reaching tlie straight and were three to four • lengths clear of Sir Abb. Inside the disbut Sir Abb came strongly oh the outside to beat him by a neck. Tosh tired in the. last little bit, to be half a length away third and Trilliarch was about, anotner length away. Sir Abb finished attractively. Tosh may improve with the run. Trilliarch had the worst, of the running in being outside two horses most of the way. Although only three started in the Settlers' Handicap, there was a most exciting finish, Enlightenment and High> Delight dead-heating for first. Enlightenment net a slow pace early from Disturbed, who was several lengths clear of High Delight. Near the five furlongs post, Disturbed ran up to Enlightenment and the pace increased, the pair leading into the straight about three lengths ahead of High Delight. Enlightenment held a slight advantage at the distance but High Delight came strongly on the outside and got up to make a dead-heat. Disturbed, who may be all the better for the race, was a close third. The dead-heaters are both by Delightment. Victory at Second Start

The each way favourite. Winepress, attempted to win the Maungatapere Hack Handicap from end to end, but he weakened in the last furlong and could finish only third. Victory went to Prival. who was having his second start, of the day and upon whom H. N. Wiggins was substituted for an apprentice rider. Windcress was in front when the field had settled down from Aymon, Prival and Lapidarian, who were clear of Raceline. Wihdcress led into the straight from Aymon, Prival and Lapidarian, with Bright Idea last. Prival came through at the distance and won niceiy from the fast-finishing Bright Idea, who paid a good dividend for ii place. Windcress was a neck awav, third and Raceline, who finished fairly well on the outside, was fourth, followed bv Lapidarian. The winner made up tor his misfortune in the first race, Bright Idea made up a deal of ground in tho last furlong. Showing a glimpse of her best form,Miss Lu won the Waipu Handicap in Very convincing style from the favourite, Land Girl. Miss Lu, Land Girl and Shv were quickly prominent and along the back, Miss Lu, Shy and Rincshot were abreast in the lead from Land Girl, Whaknpara and Kilboris. Miss Lu and Shy camo into the straight together and were closely attended by Ringshot, Land Girl a'ld Tip Toes. Miiss Lu came away after passing the distance and won easing up from Land Girl, who fought on solidly.-Shy battled on to be a good third and j?ii:igshot was a close fourth. Next to finish were Kilberis and lip Toes. The race may improve Shy and also Tip Toes, who momentarily appeared dangerous when she made a dash on the outside at the distance.
