PETTY THIEF TAKES LIFE Only a few minutes before ho was to appear before the local magistrates on a charge of larceny, William Arthur Crompton, aged 50, of Stalybridge, Cheshire, was found dpad at his home. "Death by taking poison while the balance of his mind was disturbed," was the verdict returned at the inquest held subsequently. Detective-Sergeant Balme told the coroner the articles which Crompton was charged with stealing originally were of the valuo of 6s 7d, but from what Crompton told him afterwards ho went to his house and found 293 small articles of the total value of about £4 10s.
Crompton, the officer added, was in no way financially embarrassed. He had money enough to pay for the articles.
