SHEEP STEALING
FARM MANAGER SENTENCED ONE YEAR'S IMPRISONMENT [bt telegraph—r:aESs association] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday A farm manager, Sydney Edward Richards, aged 49, who pleaded guilty yesterday to three charges of sheep stealing, was sentenced on one year's imprisonment by Mr. Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court this morning. Counsel said the thefts were undertaken to enable the prisoner to discharge an obligation of £2OO, and the first thefts were the outcome of a grudge against a neighbouring farmer. Pointing out that the thefts were carried out on three different occasions m three years, Mr. Justice Johnston said it was quite impossible that Richards should go .scot free. Others in more pressing circumstances had resisted temptation, and none of the excuses submitted seemed sufficient to persuade him that Richards should not go to prison.
