LOSS OF RATES

DEVONPORT DEFENCE AREAS The necessity for an annual grant from the Government to compensate for the loss of rates on defence areas in the borough was stressed by the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, in reporting on a conference with the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, at a meeting of the Devonport Borough Council last night. Mr. Meikle pointed out that 7 per cent of the total area of the borough was used for defence purposes, and that !;* per cent of the borough was nonrateable. The defence areas had full use without charge of drainage and other facilities, with the exception of water. A grant was also needed for the permanent surfacing of Queen's Parade, about £SOO being needed to seal the road. As traffic,to tho naval base would grow, however, it was suggested that Government assistance be sought to have the road concreted. Mr. E. Aldridge was appointed to interview the member for the dsitriot, I Mr. W. J. Lyon, the Minister of Defence, and the Prime Minister, when in , Wellington next week.
