Tho skin is very soft, liko suede, and was cured with salt and alum and afterward rubbed in with a paste of whiting. The reader would also liko to know if, after washing tho mat, she will have to cure it again. Cleaning Porcelain "K.N." (Wnimihi).— Procure a small bottle of spirits of salts and put a small quantity in an old saucer. Dip a scrubbing brush in tho liquid and rub on stained parts. Leave for a time and then wash off with clean water. Wear an old pair of gloves for on no account must the spirits of salts touch tho skin. Preserving Appleis "Mrs. P." gives the following directions for preserving apples in sulphur: Lino a box with several thicknesses of newspaper. Peel and slico tho apples into tho box. leaving a spaco in the centre in which to placo half a brick on which to stand a tin. Pile apple slices all round until tho box is nearly full and havo ready a clean tea towel and some heavy sacks. Put in some red hot embers in the tin and a tablespoonfid of sulphur on tho embers. Cover closely to keep the fumes in. Leave for 21 hours and then pack tho apples in airtight jars.
