TAKINGS STREWN ON ROAD LABOURER FINED £5 "Conductors lmve to be protected against such occurrences as these," said Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when convicting Thomas Hilton Hope, labourer, aged 3G, who was charged with striking E. J. Daniels, a conductor on an Onehunga-bound tram, at the top of S.vmonds Street at 10.40 p.m. last Saturday. Hope denied the offence, but admitted a charge of using obscene language. Sub-Inspector 'Fox said that after using obscene language in the rear of the tram Hope struck the conductor, who fell to tho ground. His takings were strewn over the roadway, .'its 8d being lost. _ Similar evidence was given by Daniels, tho conductor. Hope explained that ho had lost his head following an argument' with tho conductor regarding his refusal to allow other persons to board tho crowded tram. He used the language complained of, but only struck Daniels because lie thought Daniels was going to strike him. Tho magistrate fined Hope £2 on tho obscene language charge, and £5 on tho count of striking the conductor and ordered that part of tho latter fine be paid to Daniels in compensation for the money he had lost.
