SELF-SUPPORTING STATE
GOVERNMENT DETERMINED LABOUR M.P.'S ASSERTION [BV TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Monday Stating that the Government was determined to make New Zealand selfsupporting, Mr. C. Morgan Williams, Labour M.P. for Kaiapoi, told members of the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills Union and their wives at a meeting that tho time might shortly come when tho Dominion would have to be selfsupporting because it would bo cut off from overseas markets. Tho Government was not anxious to step in where private enterprise gave reasonable efficiency and reasonable conditions to employees, but if tbeso were not provided, the Government would certainly do so, said Mr. Williams. When tho Government gave industry a fair deal, it expected a fair deal in return. Those catering for the peoflo of New Zealand were particularly dependent on tho goodwill of the New Zealand public, and Mr. Williams thought that, when managements had time to consider calmly, they would realise that they were dependent on the goodwill of the public and of the Government
