EXCURSION STEAMER
RANGITOTO REMAINS IDLE SUMMER IN THE STREAM The Northern Company's excursion steamer Rangitoto, which has been at anchor in the stream since last summer, will not be recommissioned this season. Her summer service to Great Barrier Island will bo taken by the steamer Claymore, which will omit one trip each week to Whangarei to provide for the schedule. The Claymore will leave on the first trip on Thursday morning, and will maintain this time-table for the season. A popular unit of the Northern Company's fleet, the Rangitoto has had nearly 25 years' service since her launching at Port Glasgow. Of 300 tons, the steamer was built for passenger trade on the Amazon River, being named the Ant. She was taken over by the Admiralty and used at Portsmouth to ferry sailors between the shore and warships. The Rangitoto came from Southampton to Auckland under her own steam in 1924.
