FERNS ENDANGERED

WAITAKERE SCENIC DRIVE A grove of king ferns, or parakai, in the vicinity of Pukematekeo, at the northern end of the Waitakere Ranges, is in danger of partial destruction, as the present line of the Waitakere Scenic Drive will cut through the centre of the ferns. The king fern, stated Miss L. M. Cranwell, botanist at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, yesterday, is not found south of Taranaki, and is rare even in the Waitakere Ranges. The grove \jhich is endangered is of an unusually prolific nature, some of the fronds being 12ft. in length.
