IMMIGRATION

Sir, Xot long ago Mr. E. J. Howard, leader of the N.Z. delegation to the Coronation, is reported to have said 'lf we went down on our bended knees and asked for immigrants we could not get them. The British working man's position is better than 1 have ever known. They are far too well looked after to want to leave Great Britain." 1 would suggest that Mr. Howard get into touch with organisations interested in Empire migration, i am sure he would find that British people, in spite of better conditions here, are still eager to settle in the colonies and Dominions. From personal experience I know that many men with families would not hesitate to take advantage of any State-aided scheme of migration, and these are men well fitted to take places as skilled and semi-skilled workers. In my own case 1 have long wanted to join my family in Auckland, who are willing to nominate us and to help up to the limit of their financial resources, but the New Zealand Office in London informs me that, while money is allocated by Parliament, none is available for State assistance. Why? New Zealand is in real need of tradesmen and other workers. Mr. Howard should bear in mind that there are large areas outside the industrial districts in which workers skillqd and otherwise are not so well looked after, who yet stay on rather than move to a highly paid place which might possibly., last three to five years with a period of unemployment following. These arc the men to whom New Zealand could look for the future citizens of the Dominion. Intendixg Emigiunt. Hants, England.
