UNIVERSITY WORK
NEW BIOLOGY BLOCK PROGRESS OF BUILDING Progress of construction of the new biology block at Auckland University College was reported by the architect ?il a meeting of the college council yesterday. Ho said the work was proceeding satisfactorily, although rather more slowly than he might wish owing to the scarcity of carpenters and steelworkors. He was bringing all possible pressure on the builders to accelerate the work. It was reported that arrangements had been made with the Minister of Education, the Hon. P. Eraser, to lay the foundation stone of the building on December 13.
Detailed consideration was given to a sabbatical leave report presented by Professor 11. Belshaw. He recommended that means should be explored of making more effective use of the radio as a method of adult education, and the meeting agreed to refer the matter to the University Extension Lectures Committee to approach the Director of Broadcasting with this end in view. The university extension schetno was also reviewed. It was stated that lectures in Auckland had been well received, the course at Whangarei had been an unqualified success, but the reception at Hamilton had been disappointing. The total cost to the college of the first year's operations had been £lB.
The Duffiis Lubecki Scholarship for science for 1938 was awarded to Mr. L. H. Millcner. The W.E.A. bursarv for the year was won by Miss M. Godfrey.
