SOME USEFUL EFFORTS BEDFORD PERFORMS NICELY PETIT JEWEL SHOWS SPEED

The dirt track at Epsom was fast yesterday, when Bedford and Petit Jewel registered the best half-miles in 1.6. Other good efforts were Luminate, 1.6 2-5; Marble Boy and Forest Jewel, 1.7; John's Last, 1.7 3-5; Charteris Bay, Frank Best, Argolis and Audo Patch, 1.8. Native Fern (W. Fleming), Great Churn (S. M. August), Bedford, (F. Herring, jun.), Luminate (A. Brown), and Marble Boy (C. G. Lee), left the mile and a-half as named at intervals of about a second. Native Fern led to the, mile in 2.24, but Bedford took charge before reaching the straight to win from Luminate in 3.30. Marble Boy tangled at the turn and Great Chum, who was unhoppled, left his feet under pressure. Bedford showed dash in going the last half-mile in 1.6. Luminate, who is standing up to his work well, ran 3.29, the last half in 1.6 2-5. Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahoney) led Vanora (N. Mahoney) from the mile and a-half, but he broke badly in the first quarter and Vanora almost pulled up. When he recovered Pirate's Last again went in front and led Vanora for the last mile and a-quarter in 3.3 3-5, the, last half in 1.12 3-5. Vanora ran 3.5 and 1.12.
Lucky Love's Two Miles Lucky Love (D. Cook) gave a fine display of unhoppled pacing while running tw/J iniles in 4.40, covering the last half-mile in 1.10. John's Last (F. Herring, jiin.), Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell), Petit Jewel (W. A. Andrews), Bismuth (D. Cook) and Free Grattan (A; Cole) left the mile and a-half at intervals of a second, but the last-named broke up early and was pulled up. John's Last made play to the mile in 2.26 2-5, and a little further on Forest Jewel made a sharp move, followed by Petit Jewel, who ran to the front in the straight to win decisively in 3.30. Petit Jewel went the last half in 1.6. Forest Jewel made a good showing to go 3.33 and 1.7. He finished on solidly and is improving. John's Last went very smoothly to record 3.34, the last half in 1.7 3-5. Pink Lady (B. Dyer) trotted a mile and a-half in 3.54, tho last half-mile in 1.16. She afterwards went a mile and a-quarter in 3.3. Argolis (S. M. August) covered the last mile of two miles in 2.23, tho final half-mile in 1.8. He was unhoppled and went smoothly. Parrish Belle (C/ G. Lee) trotted steadily over two miles at a little better than a 2.30 rate. She is very bright. Gipsy Light (A. Cole) worked a mile and a-half in 3.36, going evenly throughout. ... . . Two Miles By Audo Patch Audo Patch (C. G. Lee), assisted by Floral Huon (W. Olive) over the last five furlongs, trotted two miles in 4.49. He gave a sound display, going the last mile in 2.20 and the last half in 1.8. Floral Huon took 1.11 for the last half. Free Grattan (A. Cole) and Bismuth (D. Cook) went away very slowly from the mile and a-quarter. Bismuth finishing the stronger to win in 3.9. Going away very fast, Anthony's Gift (W. Olive) ran a half in 1.8, but slowed up to complete a mile in 2.20. Marcus (A. Bryce), Charteris Bay (A. Colo), and Frank Best (J. McKendriek) left the mile and a-half with a second between them. Marcus -finished resolutely to score narrowly ... from, Charteris Bay in 3.39, the last half in 1.8 2-5. He gave a very sound display. Charteris Buy, who was free legged, went smoothly «to run 3.38 1-5, the final half in 1.8. Frank Best went 3.38 and 1.8. Great Surprise (L. Laver) trotted a mile and a-half at a little better than a 2.40 rate. Dick Redmond (A. Paton) was allotted a similar task. Assisted by Hillcrest (D. O. Jones) over the last mile, Tangaroa (C. G. Lee) worked a mile and a-quarter in 3.3, the pair coming home the last half in 1.11.
Work On The Sand On the sand, Great Sonoma (W> C. Willetts) and Autumn Lu (G. H. Stubbs) worked two miles in 5,2. , Young Rodney (L. Laver) trotted two miles in 5.0, giving a sound display. He is thriving on his work. Auto Machine (A. Brown) covered a mile and a-half in 3.42. the last half in 1.12. > ' Kewpie's Bingen (T. Carlyon) was given a round of uuhoppled work. He is on the improve. * J. Garnett gave Queenie Direct and Top Hand strong work. Worthy Quest (G. H. Stubbs) gave a smooth unhoppled display while going a mile and a-half in 3.45. She is improving in stamina. Silver Watch (L. J. Mahoney) put some dash into a sprint over three furlongs and shows signs of returning to form. : The grass track will be open for fast work to-morrow morning from 6 to 10.30, and again on Tuesday and Thursday of next week, during the same hours.
