90TH BIRTHDAY
BIRKENHEAD RESIDENT A family gathering was held at Inveray, Hinemoa Street, Birkenhead, yesterday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Mr. Alexander McGilp, who was in many stirring episodes during his 35 years' service in the Police Force in the Auckland Province. Numerous callers offered congratulations, these including a shipmate in 1876, Mrs. Miller, of Birkdale, while her sister, Mrs. Reid, of Cambridge, also a shipmato, tolegraphed her congratulations. A message of congratulation was received from Mrs. McGovern, of Romuera, widow of Inspector Francis McGovern, whose life Mr. McGilp saved during the trouble with the Hauhau Maoris at Waihou 50 years ago. •Mr. McGilp last night said he had enjoyed the day thoroughly. He did not feel a bit tired, and was pleased that the anniversary had been so successful. Ho entered into animated conversation with his many callers.
