PUREWA CEMETERY
STATE OF SAD NEGLECT DECISION OF SYNOD NEW SYSTEM OF CONTROL Means of improving the denominational cemetery at Purewa occupied the attention of members attending the third session of the 28th Synod of the Auckland Diocese for much of their time yesterday, after the Synod opened. The present state of the cemetery was described by Mr. W. Skegg, chairman of a commission appointed last year to inquire into a suggested change of control, ad being one of sad neglect and dilapidation. It was essential that something should be done to the cemetery, he said, when presenting the commission's report. Many of the graves were falling to pieces and the upkeep of the cemetery was not what it should be. Sales were falling off and the revenue was not sufficient to maintain the upkeep. A drastic change was needed, although the commission did not wish in any way to cast any reflection upon the St. John's College Trust Board. Discussion on the report was taken in committee and later it was reported that the desired change in control had been effected by the decision to have the standing committee of the diocese appoint a board of managers for the cemetery, the board to report annually to Synod.
