TRADE TO CANADA

NEW ZEALAND SERVICE INCLUSION OF ST. JOHN WINTER TRAFFIC PORT Advice has been received in Auckland from London of the inclusion of the port of St. John, New Brunswick, in the inward and outward routes of the vessels of the Montreal-Australia-New Zealand Line. The closing of the St. Lawrence River by ice will shortly prevent ships of the line working from Montreal, and St. John, for the winter, will handle the trade, in addition to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The steamer Canadian Conqueror, expected to load at Auckland on November 19, will be the first vessel to include St. John in its programme, and no cargoes will now be taken direct to Montreal until the ice opens. The motor-ship Ardenvohr, leaving Montreal on November 21 and arriving here on Christmas Eve, will bo the last outward sailing. The motor-ship Kaikourn, leaving Halifax on her maiden voyage to Auckland on December 21, will be the first outward ship to miss Montreal. All vessels arriving in Canada between December and April will discharge at St. John and finally at Halifax. That trade between Canada and Australia and New Zealand is proving of ever-increasing consequence is being proved in the replacements of the fleet formed last year when the Montreal-Australia-New Zealand Line was incorporated by the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Port Line and the Ellerman Line. The Port Line in the past few months has launched the Port St. John, Port Halifax and Port Montreal, the only vessels of tho company with names of places outside the Southern Hemisphere. The New Zealand Shipping Company last month launched the motor-ship Kaikoura, which will be followed by the Kaipara. In addition to these vessels the company has recently taken over the motor-ship Anienvohr. The new Bhips will provide a fleet of modern cargo vessels capable of making fast trips and handling cargo more efficiently.
