FANCY COSTUME PARTY
MANGERE EAST SCHOOL Youthful gaiety in an attractive setting was presented in the Mangere East public hall on Friday night, when the annual fancy costume evening of the Mangere East School was held. Over 120 children displayed many beautiful and ingenious costumes in the grand march, which was directed by the headmaster, Mr. E. W. Caddy, assisted by the following members of the staff, Mrs. Burns, Miss Logan, Miss Craig and Mr. F. Bell. There was also a large attendance of parents and friends. A series of splendidly staged items included folk dances by the younger pupils, an old-time maypole dance, and national and character dances by Elva Handling and Heather Robinson. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. J. E. Gillies, and the piping for the dances by Mr. R. A. Archibald. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. G. F. Massey, congratulated the staff and the parents' committee on their successful organisation. The judging was done by Mrs. C. S. McCallum and Mrs. A. N. Bowden, the awards being:—Most original costume: girls, Eileen Colburn (flower pot); Fay Slinger (washerwoman); bovs, Ronald Mcßeath (traffic signs); Howard Watts (easy work). Homemade costumes: girls, Loraine Gregory (butterfly); boys, Tan Browne (Roman soldier). Under five years: girls, Colleen Bow (Union Jack); boys, Dale Maxwell (jockey). Under eight: girls, Mavis Browne ("folly"); boys, Ronnie Colburn (crossing signal). Under nine: girls, Peggy Fisher (Spanish dancer); boys, Raymond Hannah (Admiral). Over nine: girls, Ray Jackson (Russian "irl); bovs, Peter Grace (archer). Best couples: "C. Webb and N. Kemplay (Chinese); A. and R. Lane (king and queen). ___________
