Friday The announcement that the Cambridge Borough Council intended to augment its water supply by drawing from the Waikato River, at a point about live miles up-stream from the town, whs made following » special meeting of the council to consider- a. report prepared by Mr. It. Worley, ol Hamilton. At the conclusion, of the discussion, which was held in committee, a resolution movgd by the Mayor, Mr. 0. H. Priestley, and seconded by Mr. G. Calvert, was carried, that the section of Mr. Worley's report relating to the taking of- a supplementary supply ol water from the Waikato River immediately below Grinter's quarry should be adopted. Mr. K. L. Wilkinson voted against the motion. A further resolution was carried that owing to the excossivo costs attendant upon the proposal to obtain a supplementary supply of water Irom the No. 2 Maungatautari spring on tho land owned and occupied by Mr. J. A. Wallace, tho scheme should be abandoned. Tho main supply at present is obtained from Maungatautari No. 1 spring. In the course of bis report, Air. Worley pointed out that samples of water taken at the point referred to had proved to he pure and wholesome and would not need chlorination. There were very few willows and weed growths on tho river above the proposed site, and the taste which is slightly noticeable iu the river water at Hamilton was not apparent there. Actually, the bost water was obtainable irom the No. 2 spring at Maungatautari, hut this scheme would cost about £7OOO, in addition to the cost of compensating property owners affected. In a statement made yesterday, Mr. Priestley said he wished to make it clear that it was not the intention of the council to cut the water off from farmers at present using tho supply. Provision was being made to supply most of the farmers who were relying on tho borough for water. The Mayor added that all previous agreement's in connection with free supplies of water from tho No. 1 Maungatautari spring were invalid. The council intended metering all tho consumers on tho line.
