AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL
COMPETITIONS AT PUKEKOHE [from our own correspondent] PtfKEKOHE, Sunday The decision of the executive of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society noi to hold a sports meeting this autumn has been reversed in response to representations and offers of co-operation from enthusiasts who waited on the executive as a deputation. The society is now arranging a monster sports meeting for Saturday. April 17, on the showgrounds at Pukekohe, and pride of place on the programme is given to a chopping event to decide the axemen's championship of Australia and New Zealand. Conditional on at least four entries coming to hand, the winner of the championship will receive prize of £55 and the competitor who finishes second a prize of .Cl 5. Wide interest will attach to the event, and entries from axemen who are in the forefront of the chopping world in Australia and New Zealand are confidently anticipated. Entries close on Saturday next. Three handicap chops also to be held include one with "l-lin. blocks for jC'Jo 10s in cash prizes and a cup valued at £'s ss. A teams chop—two men per block, 2-iin. blocks—is a further attraction and a novel one to most people who are interested in the sport. Entries for two open cycling handicaps also close next SaUirday.
