WAR ON BABBITS

VIRUS FROM ENGLAND AUSTRALIAN EXPERIMENTS Details of the programme which is to be carried out tit Clarke Island, off the coast of Tasmania, with the virus disease for the extermination of rabbits, developed in Britain by Sir Henry Martin, were announced recently in Canberra by the Minister in charge of Development, Senator McLachlan. Clarke Island has been selected for the preliminary tests to ensure that the virus is not placed beyond control, pending confirmation of evidence that it attacks only the rabbit. The research will bo in field tests conducted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Senator McLachlan said that experiments so far carried out by officers of the Council for Scientific and. Industrial Research at the University of Melbourne had been successful. Their object was to ascertain, whether other Australian animals were immune from attack. Although the experiments were not completed, they were sufficiently encouraging to induce the council to make tentative arrangements for the next stage of the work. If the initial work on Clarke Island is successful virus will be used on the whole island. Dr. Bull, chief of the division of animal health and nutrition, and Mr. Rateliffe, a biological officer, will visit Clarke Island this month to supervise preliminary work.
