FORTIFICATION PLANS

AIR BASE AT HONGKONG BRITAIN TO SPEND £8,000,000 LONDON, April 2 The announcement is expected shortly of extensive fortifications at Hongkong. These are likely to involve increased anti-aircraft batteries and the expansion of the Royal Air Force. A message from Hongkong says the plans involve the expenditure of £8,000,000. They include the construction of two new forts in addition to one already being built. It is also con- ■ firmed that Hongkong in the future will be an important Air Force base. It has long been recognised that Hongkong is one of the Empire's most vulnerable sputa in the Pacific. It cannot be protected at short notice from Singapore and fortification cannot be avoided.
