VANDALISM

Sir, —The comments of Mr. Suteliffe, principal of Scot's College, Wellington, appearing in Thursday's Herald, should cause genuine concern to all who were reared from childhood in the elements of right and wrong concerning other people's property'."- The instances quoted by the above gentleman are only too true and give only a fraction of the type of cases happening in New Zealand. Many acts of provocation and persistent theft from properties around Waitakere areas and holiday resorts are on record. Most people have despaired of finding their properties free from interference for even a month, if left unoccupied. Lorry loads of timber and firewood arc fitting stolen frequently from fenced areas, cattle run on them, fences pulled down and petty interference purposely done with defiant motives in spite of police activities. It is not easy to 'bring these marauders to heel even if they are well known. Nothing short of exemplary sentences, in special cases, will check the prevailing evil. Enough.
