AVIATION CONTEST
SCHOLARSHIP WINNER FIRST SOLO FLYING The winner of the Herald aviutioa scholarship, Mr. T. E. Clark, is {lying solo in the last stages of his training for a pilot's A licence. Mr. Clark ;madd his first solo flight at the Mangere aerodrome on Friday and he will be required to do several hours solo ilying before he is eligible to be tested for the licence. The final tests for the scholarship were held on May 9, Flying instruction at the aerodrome has been hampered during the past few months owing to extensive ground alterations ancl improvements which are being carried out by the Public "Works Department. Mr. Clark's dual instruction under tha club'fi chief instructor, Flight-Lieuten-ant D. M. Allan, totalled eight hours 50 minutes.
Several pupils have been flying solo at the Mangere aerodrome in recent weeks and Mr. T. R. F. Johnson, of Auckland, made his first solo flight on Friday.
