GOLDEN JUBILEE
CELEBRATION AT DEVONPORT Jn connection with the Devonport golden jubilee, an entertainment specially arranged for old identities, including past mayors and councillors, was held at the Victoria Theatre, Devonport, yesterday afternoon. Orange lilies, sweet peas and palms looked most effective on the stage against a background of royal blue and gold, the borough's colours. The stairs of the theatre were entwined with orange king marigolds and fern and largo bowls of gladioli decorated the lounge, where afternoon tea was served
On arrival, the guests were welcomed by the Mayor and Mayoress of Devonport, Mr. and Mrs. H. F. W. Meikle. Speakers during the afternoon were: —The Member of Parliament for Waitemata, Mr. W. J. Lyon, and the ex-mayors, Mr. E. W. Alison, H. S. W. King, Mr. J. Hislop and Mr. E. Aldridge. The Mayor presided. Songs were given by Mrs. M. Frater, who was accompanied by Miss Gladys Mallabond, and two short pictures were filmed. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Lyon, Mrs. Meikle, Mrs. 11. Duder (the oldest lady resident), Mrs. E. H. Little and Mrs. A. E. Wilson, by Mrs. T. C. Hobbs-Jones, wife of the organiser. The ladies' committee comprised:— Mrs. R. Wynyard, Mrs. P. Vos, Mrs. E. Travs, Mrs. R. Houghton, Mrs. A. R. Cleland-Pottie, Mrs. Bond, Mrs. C. Farquharson, Mrs. F. S. Procter, Mrs. M. Corbett, Mrs. M. Melvin, Mrs. A. Cleal, Mrs. J. Melhose, Mrs. W. Perkins, Mrs. A. Ferguson, Mrs. E. Johnstone, Mrs. M. Frater, Mrs. H. Hearn, Mrs. W. Aiders, Mrs. W. C. McComb, Mrs. A. C. Evans, Mrs. .T. lvil, Mrs. E. G. Whitley, Miss I. Weight and Miss J. M. Koeford
