TOURIST ROADS
GOVERNMENT'S POLICY OPENING UP OF ROUTES EXPENDITURE OF £160,000 [by telegraph—own correspondent] ROTORUA, Monday Asked to define tho Government's policy regarding tourist roads, particularly those giving access to the various lakes and other attractions in tho Rotorua district, and which, owing to their isolation, did not provide much in rates for the controlling council, tho Minister of Public Works, the Hon. It. Sample, said to-day that the Government was determined to open up the scenic beauty spots of the Dominion, not only for the benefit of overseas visitors, but also so that the people of the Dominion itself might bo able to appreciate what was undoubtedly ono of tho scenic wonder spots of the world. Many of these works were already in progress, said Mr. Semple, and in opening up the Rotorua-VVaikareinoanu route and Desert Road between. Tokaanu and Waiouru so as to make these routes suitable for continuous and heavy traffic, tho Government had embarked on an expenditure of £160,000. "There will bo no stopping and starting," said the Minister. "We liavo decided to go on with these works and that means we will go on until they are completed. The Waikaremoana Road improvement work is progressing very well, and will open up a scenic route not only of valuo to those who desire to travel over it, but also of advertising value to the whole Dominion overseas."
