CENTURY TO CAUGHEY
KING'S IN GOOD POSITION ' An attractive display of forceful batting by Caughey was appreciated by ihe spectators at the match between King's Old Boys and Y.M.C.A. at Victoria Park. In consequence King's Old Roys has every chance of a first innings win next Saturday. Fisher and L. M. Smith put on CO runs for the first wicket witSi steady batting. Neither gave a chance and Fisher in particular shaped j attractively. He seemed lo have the bowling collared when he jumped out to a slower hall from Hright and was smartly stumped. Pearson fell quickly to a similar ball, and Caughey started steadily. The latter passed Smith, who found the field hard to penef.rate. Caughey took 15 off the Hrst over from Hook, lie was choosing the right ball unerringly and when he hit. put plenty of | power into his shots. Most of his runs came from driving and hooking, but he occasionally produced a shot down the gully. When a four past cover gave him his century Caughey had given only one very difficult chance to Hright. Apart from that and some uppish shots in the gully, he had batted soundly. Smith, after taking two hours for 50, used his feet better and scored brightly until Elliott snapped up a catch in slips. He and Caughev had put on 113 runs. The remaining batsmen left the bowling as much as possible to Caughey, who raised a further 75 runs in quick time. He gave chances in the outfield toward the close of his innings, none of them being easy ones. He was eventually bowled with a slower ball from Harrison. He hit five sixes and 20 fours, and batted for about three hours. Of the bowlers Bright impressed (lie most. He bowled really well on his first spell, a slower ball puzzling the batsmen at first. Later he seemed lo lire. Elliott was also steady, but Scott might have been used more with possible success. King's Old Boys was fortunate in getting first use of the pitch, which when Y.M.C.A. batted was making Ihe ball kick up sharply. Bright lost his wicket with the total at 10.
