BATTING FAILURE
PARNELL'S POOR DISPLAY In spite of the fact that conditions were ideal, the out field being fast and the wicket in splendid condition, Parnell made a poor showing against North Shore in the game j at Devon port. The team started well and seemed as-mred of a fairly large total, but a bad slump was experienced and the side was dismissed for 152 runs. Whitelaw. who opened the Parnell innings with Wallace, was an earl.v victim to Simpson, but the advent of Vivian saw Parnell placed in a letter position. Wallaco was the more aggressive of the two and he gave an excellent all-round display in making l'J. Crisp shots through the covers and powerful hooking were features of his batting. Vivian did not seem particularly comfortable in making his li). but he played some nice shots. Two wickets were down for 70, but the next three batsmen failed to face the bowling with confidence and only seven runs had been added when the sixth wicket fell. Siddle, in company with Duncan, seemed likely 10 save a debacle, both batsmen giving a correct and restrained display lo take the total past the 100 mark. Siddle was unfortunate to be run out for 21 when he appeared set for a large score. Duncan contributed a useful 10. The bowling honours went to Simpson, who maintained a fine length, made pace off the \ wicket, ami brought an occasional delivery t in with his arm in taking seven wickets I for 58. None of the batsmen was at all comi fortable when facing him. Although Webb was dismissed early. North j Shore made a good start and had scored 120 j fur two wickets at stumps. Walters was in I an aggressive mood in scoring I!) not out, ■ solendid cover-driving characterising his exI hibtion, while Emery also batted attractively lor 38 not out. Sale helped lo give the side I a start with a well-played 21. Scores:— PARNELL.—First Innings P. F. Whitelaw, lhw. b Simpson . . . 0 W. M. Wallace, c Webb, b Salo . .. 12 11 G.
