EDEN BATSMEN FAIL

GOOD BOWLING AVERAGES The excellent bowling of the Grafton pair, Cowie. who took five wickets for 11 runs, and Felts, five for 44, was largely responsible for Eden's total of 16S in the match on the Eden Park No. 1 wicket. Cowie gained considerable nip off the pitch, while occasional deliveries came In sharply from the off and had the batsmen in difficulties. An extremely good length was responsible for Pelt's success. Both clean bowled three victims. The Eden batsmen face.l all bowlers with respect. The most enterprising batsman was Carson. He hit strongly toward the rnd of his innings and if was only a fine ball from Cowie Mich beat him. His partnership with Mills realised 7G runs. .Mills later in bis innings made some pretty shots and was unlucky to play a ball from Felts on to his wicket. The last seven Eden batsmen compiled the poor total of 39 runs, 23 of which were scored by Burgess, the not-out batsman, who was one of the few to show any confidence. His driving through the covers was a feature of his display. Cantlay and Vivian both fell victims to Cowie. Grafton's fielding was good all round. Grafton commenced well and at stamps had made 137 for three wickets. Ellis. 59 not ont, batted attractively. but crave five chances. A valuable contribution was made by Spring, 48, who played all shots very crisply. It was his eagerness to punish the attack that led to his downfall, Smith stumping him off Macßae. The latter was the best Eden trundler. and, although he took two wickefs for 40, he deserved better success. He k*pt a good length and several times beat the batsmen, but missed the stumps narrowly. Carson captured Horspool's wirket and finished the afternoon with one for 40. Scores:— , EDEN".—First Innings A. J. Postles. b Cowio .. .. .. 34. W. Carson, b Cowie .. .. 40 A. F. Weir, b Felts 32 J.
