ENGLISH TEAM'S TOUR MATCH AGAINST NORTHLAND AN EASY VICTORY GAINED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Thursday The English Rugby League touring team had no difficulty in defeating Northland by 34 points to nil this afternoon before an attendance of approximately 4000. The weather was perfect, and Jubilee Park, although a littlo soft after yesterday's rain, was in good condition. The visitors were accorded a Maori welcome on tho ground which appealed to them greatly. Tho Englishmen were a good deal heavier than tho local team and throughout the gamo threw the ball about in a reckless manner which would have proved dangerous against more formidable opposition. When these tactics resulted in the ball being lost the local backs lacked tho speed of their opponents and were unablo to uiako much headway. Tho Northland team was reinforced by R. Ilaslam, of the Marist Club, Auckland, as centre-thrcequarter, G. Kerr, Devonport, a former North Auckland Rugby representative, fullback, and R. Hollows, a Devonport forward. They justified their inclusion in tho team, each playing well. Local players to make a good showing were D. Parkes, L. Verrall and F. Hollows in the back division, and V. Payno, N. Dunn. J. Taylor and 11. Bowyer in tho forwards. All-Round Perfection There was little to choose among tho English team, each playing a great backing-up game. Brough, at fullback, initiated some excellent movements and scored a nice try. Hudson played well on tho wing and had more opportunities than Morley, while the halfbacks, Jenkins and Watkins, were very tricky. Arkwright, Hodgson, Atkinson and froup shone in tho forwards. Tfie teams were as follows: England.—J. W. Brongh, B. Hudson, W. Belshuw, E. (J. Davies, J. C. Morley, li. Jenkins. W. Watkins. H. Fields. J. Miller, L. A. Troup, J. Arkwright, M. Hodgson, A. Atkinson. Northland.—G. Kerr, D. Parkes, R. Haslam. C. Hamilton, L. Verrall, F. Hollows, C. Lenno, J. Taylor, E. O'Callaghan, V. Payne, H. Bowyer, R. Hollows, N. Dunn. England kicked off and within a couple of minutes Payne broke through and very nearly score! for Northland, which was shortly after awarded a kick in a handy position, but Parkes failed. The visitors soon showed the trowd some first-class football when Watkins got the ball in his own twentyfive and handed on to Hudson, who outpaced the opposition to score between the posts. Hodgson converted. Hudson atrain scored a few minutes later when ho picked up in tho loose and got oyer at tho corner. Hodgson failed with the kick. England was getting the ball repeatedly from the scrums and the forwards and backs combined in excellent passine movements, but, tho tackling of Dunn. Verrall and F. Hollows was deadlv, while Kerr was in form at line-kicking Hudson made a nice run down the line and in-passed to Davies. who cut in past Kerr to score between the posts. Hodgson converted. Try Prom Half-way F. Hollows, Parkes and Ilaslam were prominent in a passing movement for Northland, but Haslam was pushed out near the corner. Hudson nearly scored again, but was well stopped by Kerr. Rrough now decided to take a hand and getting the ball at halfway ran down the lino, "dummied" past Kerr and scored at the corner. Hodgson missed the kick and half-time came with the score:—England, lfi, Northland, O. Fpon resuming Northland got (he ball a little more from the scrums and was successful in stopping England from scoring for some time. Northland had opportunities when England was penalised several times near the goal posts, but the kicking was poor. Watkins made a strong run to the fullback and handed the ball to Troup, who scored near the posts, Hodgson missing the kick. The best local back movement was seen when Verrall, Haslam, R. Hollows and Verrall were associated, the last-named beine stopped near the line. Hudson sent Davies off and this player passed to Miller, who sent Atkinson over between the posts. Hodgson converted. Watkins cut-in and Jenkins beat the full- j back and scored between tho posts. Hodgson converted. Hamilton intercepted nt half-way. 1 but did not have enough pace and- was stopped near the line by Jenkins. Tho final score came when Fields Rent Arkwright over between the posts Hodgson converted., makincr j the score:— England .. .. 34 Northland .. .. .. 0 Mr. W. J Br.vdon, Kamo, was referee. Tho curtain-raiser resulted: —Pakeha repre- j sentatives, 11; Maori representatives, 5. The English team was the guests of the I Whangarei Boxing Association at a tourna- j ment in the Town Hall this evenintr.
