A GRADUAL RECOVERY UNCERTAINTY AS TO FUTURE Business in India has been practically at a standstill owing to uncertainty regarding the political future of the country, but it is now gradually recovering, according to Mr. A. Tait, assistant manager in Calcutta for Thomas Cook and Son, Limited, who arrived from Sydney by the Wanganella yesterday in the course of his second holiday trip round tho world. He stated that as a result a number of the old-established firms had gone out of business, and Indians wero practically monopolisng many industries. "The white people in India can look forward to continual social trouble among the natives, and unless we take a very firm hand, tho future is very uncertain," said Mr. Tait in commenting upon the political situation. "With self-government, India's position may be the same as that of Ireland." Referring to the tourist business, Mr. Tait said that an increasing number of tourists had passed through India this year, and several American vessels had called there. Mr. Tait is accompanied by his wife, who was formerly a missionary in Korea for seven years. They will leavo for Vancouver by the Niagara on July 21.
