NAVAL BOARD

CAPTAIN R. D. OLIVER APPOINTMENT ANNOUNCED [from our own correspondent] LONDON, June 24 The Admiralty announces the appointment of Captain It. D. Olirer, D.S.C., for duty as Second Naval Member of the New Zealand Naval Board; He has been lent to the New Zealand Government as from August 8. Captain Oliver has already been in New Zealand, for in 1920 he was lieutenant in H.JI.S. Renown on her Zealand tour. He was in H.M.S. Inflexible at the outbreak of the Great War, and was first in action at the Falkland Islands. Next he was in the Dardanelles campaign, and he also saw action off the Belgian coast in 1916. Captain Oliver did excellent work in destroyers, for which he was mentioned four times in despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Captain Oliver succeeds Captain L. Vaughan Morgan as Second Naval Member of the New Zealand Naval Board, which at present consists of the Minister of Defence, Hon. F. Jones, as president, the Commodore commanding the New Zealand Section of the Royal Navy, Commodore the Hon. E. R. Druinmond, as First Naval Member, and a captain of the Royal Navv as Second Naval Member. Captain Yaughan Morgan, who succeeded Captaiu C. Sinclair Thomson on his appointment to the command of the cruiser Ajax on the South American Station two years ago. has been relieved at the end of his normal term of office, each Second Naval Member being appointed for two years. Captain Vaughan Morgan will leave for England shortly. The board was constituted in 1921 and was charged with the control of all matters relating to the naval forces upon the policy directed by the Minister and vested with the execuive command of tin? naval forces.
