EXPLOSION ON LAUNCH RAPID SPREAD OF FIRE MAN JUMPS INTO SEA RESCUE BY FISHING BOAT [BY TELEGRAPTI —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday Set on fire by an explosion, the fishing launch Elfie was burned to the water level a mile at sea from the fishermen's wharf at Kaikoura on Saturday. The only man aboard, Mr. S. Low, of Kaikoura, was at first stunned by the explosion and then forced to leap into the sea to escape the flames. Mr. Low was in the engine room when a violent explosion threw him into the cockpit. Flames immediately enveloped the craft. Recovering from the shock, Mr. Low found that the fire had spread so rapidly that nothing could be done to extinguish it and he bad to make a hurried leap into the water to save himself. Another fishing launch, which was on its way to the fishing grounds, picked him up and towed the burning boat into the harbour, where it was beached. Mr. Low suffered burns and bruises about the face, but was little the worse for his experience. The Elfie was owned by Mr. G. Taylor, of Kaikoura, and was operated by Mr. Low. The launch was fitted with a quantity of new tackle, all of which was destroyed and both Mr. Low and the owner will be heavy losers.
