PROMOTED ADMIRAL

SIR E. R. G. R. EVANS NOTED BRITISH OFFICER LONDON, July 9 Vice-Admiral Sir E. R. G. R. Evans, famous as ''Evans of the Broke" and former commodoro of the Australian and South African Divisions of the British Navy, has been promoted admiral and re-appointed Commander-in-Chief at the Noro. Admiral Sir Edward RadelifFe Evans was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the African Station in 1933. He was born in 1881 and married the daughter of Mr. T. G. Russell, of Christchurch, New Zealand. After being on the relief ship to the Discovery Expedition in 1902-04, he was appointed second-in-command of the British Antarctic Expedition in 1909, being engaged in work on the Beardmore Glacier.

On the death of Captain Scott he returned in charge of the remaining

members of the ill-fated expedition. Ho commanded H.M.S. Broke during her famous engagement in company with H.M.S. Swift against six German destroyers in 1917. Among other ships he lias commanded the Carlisle and the Repulse, and was rear-admiral commanding the Royal Australian Navy in 1929-31. Sir Edward lias been the recipient of honours from the Governments of most of the chief countries of the world. In recent years lie has written books on naval and Antarctic subjects, as well as a number of books for boys.
