DRIVERS RETURN TO WORK
DISPUTE WITH CITY FIRM The dispute between an Auckland firm of carriers and 11 of their drivers has been settled and the men will return to work this morning. The Auckland Drivers' Union had written to the Minister of Labour, the lion. H. T. Armstrong, and requested the prosecution of tho firm, because it allegedly dismissed a number of drivers who would not accept the old rates of pay. Like a number of other firms in Auckland tho firm concerned decided not to pay its men on the 1931 award basis until the requisite legislation had been passed. Meanwhile; their driver* will receive Is f)d an hour, the rate at which they were paid until the end of June. Inquiries show the Department of Labour communicated with the firm and asked if the partners were willing to take the men back. The department was informed that their previous offer of Is 9d an hour held good pending the legislation the Government intended introducing to reinstate the 1931 award conditions.
