MORE CRIME

SUBURBAN BURGLARIES HOUSEHOLDERS WARY STREET ATTACKS ON WOMEN The usual winter epidemic of crime appears to be spreading in Auckland, and householders in the suburbs are taking special precautions to ensure that entrance to their dwellings at night, or in their absence during the day, is made as difficult as possible, While burglaries have shown an alarming increase of late, considerable concern has been aroused by two recent attacks on women in suburban streets. Burglars began operating again this month following a long period of inactivity. Several houses were broken into at tho beginning of tho month, and over a week ago detectives were called upon to investigate the theft of goods valued at £3OO from a factory in Newton. Several minor burglaries followed in tho suburbs, and a surprisingly impudent theft was perpetrated in broad daylight last Thursday at a house in Hackett Street, Ponsonby, a thief entering and stealing a suit of clothes and a pair of shoes. Auckland detectives aro keenly alive to tho position, and, although this type of burglary is particularly difficult to check, a suspect was arrested on Saturday morning. A house in George Street, Newmarket, where silver trophies and jewellery, valued at about £IOOO, were stolen two years ago, was visited last week by a man who was disturbed before ho could force an entrance. Inquiries yesterday revealed tho probability that tho house was kept under observation by a suspicious character lurking in the Auckland Domain, which is opposite the house.

While incidents of this nature are engaging the close attention of the police, inquiries have to be made into such offences as thefts of motor-cars and bicycles, which are still very com' mon.
