OBITUARY
MR. A. H. S. LUCAS AUSTRALIAN SCIENTIST SYDNEY, June 11 The death is announced of Mr. A. H. S. Lucas, aged 83. He was one of the foremost educationists and scientists in Australia.
The late Mr. Lucas, who was until recent years senior master at tho Sydney Grammar School, was for a time acting professor of mathematics in the University of Tasmania. Ho was formerly a master at Weslev College, and later was on the staff of the Biology School of Melbourne University. Ho was part-author of an elementary text-book on botany, well-known as "Dendy and Lucas," to generations of science and medical students. Sinco his retirement from active teaching, Mr. Lucas had done valuable work in connection with Australian seaweeds.
SIR JOHN BOWSER FORMER VICTORIAN PREMIER MELBOURNE. June 11 The death is announced of Sir John Bowser, Premier of Victoria in 1918 and later Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
The late Sir John Bowser was born in London in 1856 and was educated at Edinburgh University. Ho embraced journalism as a career and later became the editor and proprietor of the Chronicle, Wangaratta, Victoria. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1894 until 1929, when ho retired, and was leader of tho Country Party in 1908 and -again in 1916. In 1917 and 1918 Sir John became Premier of Victoria, and for the following two years he was Chief Secretary and Minister of Labour. Ho was' Speaker of the Assembly from 1924 to 1927, in which year he received a knighthood.
