RECLAIMING LAND

FREEMAN'S BAT AEEA

AUTHORITY GIVEN FOR WORK PART OF COMPREHENSIVE PLAN By Gazette notice, the Auckland Harbour Board has been given authority to reclaim land in Freeman's Bay. The authority is conferred under the Harbours Act, 1923, permitting the reclamation of areas from the sea, where such work will not affect navigation and is for the benefit of the public. The area now to be dealt with comprises approximately one acre one rood in the vicinity of Nelson Wharf. The cost, depending upon the nature of the material used in the breastwork, will be at least £10,500. The development of the waterfront in the vicinity of Nelson Wharf has been in an inconclusive state, because no reclamation scheme on a comprehensive scale is possible until a lease of a large portion of the land adjacent, which includes water rights, falls due in about seven years' time. However, without interfering with the existing water rights or ust, it is now proposed under a scheme drawn up by the engineer and acting-superin-tendent, Mr. D. Holderness, to construct a length of approximately 350 ft. of the proposed breastwork at the eastern or Nelson Street end and to reclaim the area previously mentioned. It is considered the reclamation will provide four or live valuable sections for leasing with quay and water frontage.
