YACHTSMEN'S EXPERIENCE

CAUGHT AT SEA IN GALE ONE VESSEL WRECKED ON REEF SYDNEY. April 20 A gale on s the New South Wales coast was encountered by three Sydney yachts returning on Saturday from a regatta at Lake Macquarrie. The yachts San Pan, Kestrel and Rondon were proceeding southward when they were struck by a southerly gale which forced them to turn back and run before it, aiming for Newcastle Harbour.

The San Pan, which was too close to the shore, was wrecked on Big Ben Reef, a few hundred yards south of Newcastle Harbour breakwater. Its crew of two were rescued by a boat's crew from the pilot steamer after a hazardous row through rock-strewn waters. The yacht later slipped off the reef and was carried, waterlogged, by the tide round into the harbour.

The Kestrel signalled for assistance and was towed into the harbour op Saturday night. The Rondon remained out all night and made the harbour safely yesterday.
