WOLVES IN NEW ZEALAND
Sir, —In your issue of April 15, I noticed a letter signed F. Farle Vaile stating that in two generations of Alsatian-Maori dog cross we would have wolves in this country. Would Mr. Vailo kindly let the public know on which side the wolf is? I have before me some of the leading authorities on dog breeding, who state that there is no wolf cross in the Alsatian, and if there were it would be diminishing in every generation, and would disappear in 50 years of true breeding. We have ample proof that the Alsatian has been truly bred for over 100 years. Now, the Maori dog, I believe, is a mongrel cross of the various dogs of New Zealand, mostly sheep and cattle dogs, so there should be no wolf cross in them, and to produce wolves in New Zealand we should have to have the wolf or a distinct wolf cross. Perhaps Mr. Vaile can tell us where the wolf cross is, and show us some reasonable proof that it is here. Valley KLennels.-
