PEACE BASIS
ETHIOPIA'S TEEMS READY FOR DISCUSSION RETENTION OF SOVEREIGNTY By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received Janunry 17, 5.5 p.m.) Times Cable ' LONDON'. .Tan, 17 The Addis Ababa correspondent of the Times says the Abyssinian Government suspects that new peace proposals are being prepared with the object of securing a further postponement of the oil embargo, which is regarded as necessary to the speedy conclusion of the war. Nevertheless Abyssinia remains ready to discuss peace on a reasonable basis, namely the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of the aggressor from Abyssinian territory. Abyssinia also would accept disinterested assistance from the League provided that the Emperor has the right to choose or reject particular foreign advisers and that he maintains his sovereign administrative and executive control over them; provided also that there he no Italian participation in this scheme. Further, Abyssinia would agree to economic development under the League's auspices without special rights for any nation or for foreigners as against Abyssinians. She would want an outlet to the sea with a corridor over which she would have unqualified sovereignty. The correspondent says the Abyssinian Government is not likely to insist upon the payment of an indemnity.
