Hollywood studios paid over £400,000 in wages to extras during the first nino months of last vear. This is an increase of more than £IOO,OOO on the figures for the previous year. Paul Robeson, who is at present singing over the radio in New York, after a concert tour in England and France, will go to Hollywood shortly to appear in " Show Boat " for Universal Pictures. Edward Arnold, who made a great impression in his characterisation of Diamond Jim Brady, that romantic salesman of the 'eighties in "Diamond Jim," has now completed a film version of " The Hangover Murders " entitled " Remember Last Night?" As a result of his performance in the latest Shirley Temple picture, " The Littlest Rebel," John Boles has been given a new long-term contract by Darryl F. Zanuck, vice-president in charge of production for Twentieth Century-Fox Films. Boles' next rolo will be in " A Message to Garcia." Hereafter he will alternate between dramatic roles and singing parts.
Metro-Gold wyn-Mayer are now lookins for a singing Romeo to play in the Nelson Eddv-Jeanetto Macdonald picture "Rose Marie." The prologue to the film includes excerpts from Gounod s opera.
Proving a point which will interest thousands of women, Travis Banton, noted Hollywood designer, is planning for Carole Lombard clothes that can bo authentically reproduced for approximately £5 per costume. This news is a convincing contradiction that the Hollywood designers' ideas Regarding fashions necessitate fabulous sums of monoy.
In " Three Kids and a Queen ''May ■Robson plays the most dcligntfullly humorous part in her screen careei. She .is seen as an eccentric old maid, whose avaricious relatives, in an attempt to share her money, have inspired a hearing into hor sanity. Rendered unconscious in a runaway accdent, Miss Robson is taken to a basement flat occupied by an Italian family. Convalescing and growing to like her new surroundings, the wealthy old lady refuses to leavo.
