PROTECTION FOR THE CAR Having in previous articles dealt at length with house construction, interior and exterior decoration, we feel that some attention to the garage. With such an arrangement one is protected from inclement weather whilst going to and from the garage; furthermore, the system leaves the remainder of the section available for other purposes, whilst the major cost of the garage is eliminated. The only costs incurred by this method are the roller shutter or' doors and hangers, the concrete floor and a partition of—usually—two walls. Should the garage be a detached building, it may be built of asbestos sheets, timber, brick, hollow concrete blocks or corrugated iron. Asbestos sheeting is the most economical, whereas the appearance of the various materials offered is a matter of taste, any one of which will adequately shelter your car and will conform to the by-laws. Roofing is available in either corrugated iron or earthenware tiles. Now for the front of your garage, which is the enclosure and the focussing point, the spring-balanced roller shutter d oors suspend are liable to drag soon after using, whereas the shutter runs smoothly at all times. Many of these wooden shutters are as large as 16ft. in a width, but, though they have been in use for several years, they are proving most satisfactory even in very exposed conditions. The usual size for a household garage is Bft. x Bft. The large ones are provided with chain gear. These redwood shutters are New Zealand made, so that, in the unlikely event of a broken part, this can be quickly replaced. The shutters are easy and economical to install; the slats are interlaced with substantial brass strips and the whole is simply hung in iron brackets which in turn are bolted to the studs, operating after the manner of a roller blind.
